Falta, Matěj ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
Bachelor thesis Success Factors of the British Arms Industry in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s and 1990s deals with two tranches of the giant arms trade known as Al-Yamamah, whose memorandum of understanding was signed in the 1980s. It is divided into three main chapters, each representing one factor examined. The thesis tries to answer whether the established hypotheses - that the factors of success were trust, corruption and a higher degree of interconnection between the private and public spheres - are correct. Text first describes relations between the two countries since the First World War until normalization of relations in 1963 after the Suez crisis and first major arms contracts in the 1960s and 1970s. Thesis mentions the situation after Operation Desert Shield, when ongoing contracts were in jeopardy, and also covers the ethical side of arms trades. Text deals with the foundation of corrupt practices and, consequently, with corruption in the Al-Yamamah trade itself. Finally, it deals with the degree of interconnection of the private and public spheres, the role of prime minister Margaret Thatcher, the export organizations DSO/DESO and shortly also with Her...

Logic of the Single European Army
Kozelka, Josef ; Sršeň, Radim (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
The current economic crisis has led the leaders of the European states to decrease their spending on defense. This paper argues that if this reduction in public spending is not offset by the increase in international cooperation than the military capability of the region is going to deteriorate in the near future. The argument that the defense budgets are decreasing is based on the analysis of the data available for the public defense expenditures. Further six case studies of EU states are presented showing that the potential decrease in capability is observable in a wide range of EU countries. The case for greater international cooperation is based on the economic theory of comparative advantage and benefits of competition in the defense market. Furthermore, academic literature supporting this hypothesis is also presented to the reader throughout the paper. The conclusion of this paper is that the current tendency of governmental politicians of EU countries to ignore the need for greater international cooperation in the defense sector is unsustainable and that if European Union wants to maintain its position as one of the world power blocks, systematic reform of the EU defense market will need to be introduced.

From an economic perspective, the paper focuses on the profitability of individual stores, both in terms of domestic and foreign orders. Boom in the weapon production in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s
Pejsar, Adam ; Skřivan, Aleš (advisor) ; Chalupecký, Petr (referee)
The position and history of the Czechoslovak Republic played a key role in its decision to focus on the weapon industry during the interwar period. Given the unstable situation in the newly emerged countries in the Central European region and with respect to the tradition of a heavy-weapon production, Czechoslovakia began to produce arms on a much larger scale. The increasing armament in 1930s was not even stopped by the Great Depression. Furthermore, weapon production helped the country to report higher exports and boosted the otherwise stagnating economy. The boom in the weapon production came during 1934-1938. Due to the quality of Czechoslovak arms and the high demand for them abroad, the Czechoslovak total export showed at least a slight increasing trend during this period. Nevertheless, large public expenditures in this sector had to be covered by augmenting public debt and increased tax rates.
